King Kamehameha Day Parade June 10, 2017

Hawaiian culture is celebrated all year long and there are many opportunities to experiences our music, dance, crafts and more!

One “must see” event is the annual King Kamehameha Day Celebration Parade that starts at 9 a.m. on June 10, 2017 in Kailua Kona. It’s just an enjoyable scenic drive from Mauna Lani  Point.

The Festival is part of the Kamehameha Day celebration that was first established in 1871 as a national holiday of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i. Kamehameha Day was created to honor the memory of Kamehameha the Great (c. 1758-1819) who united the Hawaiian Islands in 1810 to became Hawai‘i’s first King.

This year’s parade theme is “Hoʻohiwahiwa No Kamehameha,” translated as “Honoring Kamehameha.” The Hawaiian tradition of pāʻū riding, celebrates the paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) traditions introduced in the 1820s. Resplendent in the foliage and colors of each island, beautiful women and handsome men make their way along the Parade route.

The parade begins at 9:00 a.m. from the Royal Kona Resort 75-5852 Alii Drive, and continues along Aliʻi Drive, past Kamakahonu by the pier, then up Palani Road to Kuakini Highway.

After the parade, enjoy the Hoʻolauleʻa (music and art festival) at historic Huliheʻe Palace. Also from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, there will be music, crafts, and food at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au. Enjoy local food, see masters create traditional arts and crafts, watch beautiful hula dancers and listen to award-winning Hawaiian musicians.

Just ask our Mauna Lani Point concierge for insider information on drive time and where to park for a good viewing point. If you can’t schedule your Mauna Lani Point condo vacation to include June 10, just ask the concierge for other ways to experience Hawaiian music and dance.
