Where to stay in Hawaii: Trust Guest Reviews

How do you decide where to stay in Hawaii on your next vacation? Every resort’s website is full of stunning pictures of the ocean, smiling people engaged in water activities or sunning majestically on a lounge chair by the pool. The hotel’s location on the island is certainly a consideration, as are their amenities but nothing speaks louder than guest reviews of the property.

In a recent study conducted by TripAdvisor, 89% of Travelers were influenced by reviews when booking their accommodations; 65% by online travel reviews and 48% by personal recommendations. Many people take to the Internet for help in choosing their vacation rental either by asking their social community for recommendations or by reading online reviews, which they perceive as less biased than the resort’s information.

It isn’t all about the 5-star reviews, travelers also want to see how staff, the concierge and management dealt with any issues that arose. Consumers don’t expect perfection, in fact, they usually regard it with suspicion but reviews that highlight exemplary service stand out.

Mauna Lani is a first class resort with every possible amenity you could want in a resort.

Wonderful place to stay!”  TripAdvisor Review
This place was gorgeous. As soon as we walked in my daughter and I were drop-jawed and so happy with the view!

Amazing vacation”  Yelp Review
The Mauna Lani Resort is truly paradise and heaven on earth. We had a wonderful time and cannot wait to go again.

Terrific Stay!!!TripAdvisor Review
This was a great choice for our Big Island vacation. We’ve previously stayed at the Hilton Waikaloa which is nice, but Mauna Lani Point is like home.

When you are reading reviews, keep some things in mind:
Recent Stays: you want to look at the most recent reviews to ensure that their experience will closely mirror your own. Management changes, renovations are made, staffing is corrected.

Descriptive Reviews: for a Hawaii vacation for example, see what guests have to say about the resort grounds, views and location as well as amenities, customer service and local dining recommendations.

Action Words: look for adjectives to best describe the resort such as peaceful, serene, family-friendly, fun, exciting or luxurious.

“Relaxing and reenergizing!”

We stayed here for 10 days with two teenagers.  What we were looking for was stress free relaxation and that’s what we got.  We stayed in a beautifully appointed two bedroom unit on the ground floor overlooking a scenic golf hole and the ocean.  The kitchen was highly functional and we loved the communal BBQ area.  Our unit was a 5 min. walk to the resort’s beach which was never crowded and always had beach chairs available.  The weather was amazing.  It doesn’t appear to ever rain in this area.

We rented a car and saw most Island sites.  Highlights were the helicopter tour from Hilo to the volcano and renting a boat and going snorkeling at Cook’s monument.

While we rarely contacted the resort staff, when we did the service was first rate.  Daily cleaning was timely and thorough.

Visitor from Denver, Colorado – August 2011

My husband and I just got back from a wonderful vacation at the Mauna Lani Point on the Big Island of Hawaii.  Our trip was from 8/10/2011 to 8/17/2011, we rented a one bed condo with fairway view J201 through Classic Resort.  I saw some reviews suggested rent directly through the owner, but we got a pretty good deal for $199/day, so we took it.  Of course, ocean view would be better if you had the $$$.

We had stayed at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel in 2008, during that stay, while walking around the properties, we found this Mauna Lani Point, so, we decided to try the condo for a change.  Well, we are glad we did, there are so many good things about this property, I can’t list them all, but for us, we are big on snorkel, so beach quality is very important for us.  With this condo location, it comes with an easy access (2 min drive, or 12 min walk on a shoreline trail) to a private beach club, which has a very nice sandy beach, deep reef with abundant fish and coral, and the best of all, it is calm almost all the time, including afternoon, which is rare for most of other beaches.  I think the name the bay is Makaiwa Bay.  Finding a good snorkel site is not that hard, but a good snorkel site with all the comfort you need is hard.  That’s why this private beach club is such a great thing, parking lot was never full, cabana and beach chairs are more than enough to go around, oh, they are free by the way.  YEAH!! a restaurant on site with decent price and good food, you can also rent any beach toys with the rental shack too.

Ok, enough with the beach, the property itself is very well maintained as well.  One big feature we enjoyed the most is the outdoor BBQ area next to the pool, which is centrally located among the buildings.  It has 4 or 5 Grills and covered Pavilion with a fully equipped outdoor kitchen.  We had done dinner twice over there while watching the sunset, every pleasant.

“Classic gem with warm aloha”

Mature grounds, spacious and well designed floor plans, each bedroom has a large en suite bath, and a large well equipped kitchen – a perfect family vacation.  Our 5th visit because of the warm aloha about this property.  No ocean views, but the beach is a hike or drive away and uncrowded and lovely. Management team is located near the entrance to Mauna Lani resort and were very gracious and helpful.  The Islands at Mauna Lani set the standard for outstanding design and comfort and is now competitively priced due to the addition of newer condo developments nearby.  Each unit is individually owned and decorated but the property management team guarantees uniform supplies, maintenance and good condition of each unit and furnishings.  This is a special place.

“We adore Mauna Lani – our favorite place on the Big Island!!”

Very quiet and peaceful, great beach for swimming and snorkeling, near good shopping and restaurants.  Discovered a 600-year-old village up the coast from there – great hike!!  Easy to get over to Hilo side.  Weather was perfect while we were there.  What more could we ask of a vacation?  URSULA AND HERB JOHNSON, California

“Couldn’t have been more wonderful”

Eight of us stayed at Mauna Lani Point , 2 parents, 2 teenagers, 2 pre-teens, and 2 grandparents.  We had a wonderful time, the only thing we wish would have been different was that we could have stayed for another couple weeks!  The condos were beautiful, daily housekeeping was great, the grounds keepers did a wonderful job, and the front desk was extremely helpful.  The rec area is so nice, the pool and hot tub were very refreshing.  We used the BBQ grills a few times, very convenient – I don’t know how they get them so clean!  🙂 The beach club was fun, and we loved the ancient fish ponds.  The panaramic views were outstanding and the sunsets are unimaginable.  We loved Mauna Lani Point, nothing could have been better – cannot wait to get back there again!

“Stay in Paradise”

Stayed at Mauna Lani Point Condos 4/11 with our two daughters 6 and 9;  we had a wonderful time.  The condo is gorgeous, very private, and the kitchen was such a nice bonus.  The pool area with open barbecues is very convenient for cooking your own dinners not to mention very beautiful.  The beach club was awesome;  kids snorkeled right off the beach and could see tons of fish just a few feet out.  Can’t wait to go back!

“A piece of Paradise”

We have had the delightful experience of staying in E 102 unit at Mauna Lani Point and we keep returning!  The magnificent view of the signature hole basking in the beautiful Hawaiian sunset is breathtaking.  Inviting, spacious accommodations; both bedrooms have private baths as well as a powder room; very comfortable for 2 couples or families.  Only steps to the well appointed barbecue area and lovely pool–perfect for afternoon swims after a beach day.
Protected beach club that offers good food, and beachside access…
The owners have compiled great restaurant and day trip suggestions–We can’t wait to go back!

“Paradise at the Mauna Lani.”

We stayed in a Townhome which was just beautiful.  We had two master suites and room for two additional guests.  The place was furnished very nicely and we just walked out facing the fairway.  As the place was 21OO ft. it felt like a home.  It was quiet with a pool just across the street.  Walk to the beach about 10-15 minutes.  We highly recommend this place and have full intentions on returning.  The staff are most helpful.
